I was introduced to Malcom McLaren around 84 during one of my early morning World Famous Supreme Team Show sit in's. Keith Haring, Herbie Hancock (Rockit), Madonna, Zulu Nation and HIP-HOP were the good words on the street. I remember hearing Buffalo Gals for the 1st time and HATING IT! In fact that song went in the same pot as the Rappin Duke "Duhha Duhaa" and Kool Mo Dee's "Wild Wild West". You see the running theme...Hip-Hop + Country = WIZZACK!

Can I say that I FULLY comprehended what Malcom McLaren meant to hip-hop...nah. I am not discounting his influence either, but I would be fronting if I said I knew just how much of a pioneer he was before he passed away. The funny thing about an icon's death is that you immediately gravitate to what you are familiar with recalling your memories. A nostalgic fondness develops then a respectful curiosity for their body of work. In my case the order was the Supreme Team (McClaren sampled their program opening in his homage "World Famous"), "Hobo Scratch", "Hey DJ" then "Buffalo Gals". Now out of these 4 songs I naturally gravitated to "Hey DJ" and "Hobo Scratch" which were both monsters, but it was not until my man Harry Fobbs (RIP) hipped me one day while blasting "Buffalo Gals" in his Panasonic Boom Box, maybe it was the knock of the beat at that moment but from that point on I was in love. Hip-Hop was forever part of my life! McClaren is indeed an icon, his contributions are timeless and the music lives on forever. May you rest in peace MM.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is a 1989 film release written and directed by Peter Greenaway starring Richard Bohringer, Michael Gambon, Helen Mirren and Alan Howard in the titular roles. The film's graphic scatological, violent and nude scenes, as well as its lavish cinematography and formalism were noted at the time of its release.

Master director Greenaway outdoes himself with this grisly fairy tale. The thief, Albert Spica, (Gambon) is a gangster, repugnant and boorish, who holds court at the same table in his opulent restaurant every night surrounded by his lackeys (Tim Roth and the late Ian Dury included). When his cultured and repressed wife Georgina (Mirren) becomes magnetically attracted to a solitary diner in the restaurant, the two begin a secret affair under the nose of her dangerous husband. With the help of the restaurant's chef, the time the lovers share is kept secret from the vicious Albert...for a while. The production design and artful camera work is breathtaking, although violent, disturbing and darkly comedic.

I have a fond recollection of "renting" Fellini's 8 1/2 from Blockbuster on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. My girlfriend and I excitedly went home for movie night, watched it then wondered exactly what the fuck was it that we just saw!? At the time we thought damn we would have been better off getting Rambo!

8 1/2 in a nutshell was about a famous Italian film director,Guido Anselmi who is suffering from "director's block". Stalled on his new science fiction film that includes veiled autobiographical references, he has lost interest amid artistic and marital difficulties. As Guido struggles half-heartedly to work on the film, a series of flashbacks and dreams delve into his memories and fantasies; they are frequently interwoven with reality.

Turns out Fellini's work is really brilliant and 8 1/2 is an award winning classic. Check it out even if you dont "get it" the cinematography and costumes alone are worth watching. 8½ screened at the Cannes Film Festival in April 1963 to "almost universal acclaim", N'Joy

When I was 19 my best friend Wayne worked in 787 7th ave. I entered the lobby to see a huge "Picasso'esque" type of mural that held my attention. The 45 King first gained fame with his breakbeat track "The 900 Number" in 1987. The song featured a looping tenor sax solo from Marva Whitney's "Unwind Yourself." The 45 King signed with Tuff City Records that year and given a production deal. "The 900 Number" remains his signature work, having been resampled by many artists. He was also featured on the 1989-Hustlers Convention album on the UK label Music of Life, which is considered by many to be hip-hop's first-ever live album.

In 1998 the 45 King produced "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" for Jay-Z. The song was a hit that featured a looped chorus from the Broadway Musical Annie. In 2000, he produced the platinum track "Stan" for Eminem, solidifying his reputation as a celebrated hip-hop producer.

The musical style performed by Fela Kuti is called Afrobeat, which is a fusion of jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native "tinker pan" African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masakela, under the uncanny Hedzoleh Soundz. Afrobeat is also characterized by having vocals, and musical structure, along with jazzy, funky horn sections. In 1969, Fela took his band to the United States. While there, Fela discovered the Black Power movement through Sandra Smith (now Izsadore)—a partisan of the Black Panther Party—which would heavily influence his music and political views and renamed the band Africa ’70. He was known as "Tenno", literally "Emperor", for his dictatorial directing style. He was a perfectionist who spent enormous amounts of time and effort to achieve the desired visual effects. For the rainstorm scenes in Rashomon, because the falling water (provided by fire trucks) did not show up on film against the sky, he dyed the water black with calligraphy ink in order to achieve the effect of heavy rain. In the final scene of Throne of Blood, in which Mifune is shot by arrows, Kurosawa used real arrows shot by expert archers from a short range, landing within centimetres of Mifune's body. In Ran (1985), an entire castle set was constructed on the slopes of Mt. Fuji only to be burned to the ground in a climactic scene.

If you have never heard of Akira Kurosawa then you may want to do a background check on him. His work has influenced moviemaking for decades. His legacy in filmmaking is staggering. Ahead of Akira Kurosawa's centenary on March 23, the Film Forum in New York City more or less runs through the auteur's consummate filmography (on queue: Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo) in six action-packed weeks. Two masterpieces also bracket this domo-arigato series: Stray Dog, an early, naturalistic film about a detective and the search for his missing gun in postwar Tokyo, and Ran, Kurosawa's superlative, late-career translation of King Lear to the feudal East and its tragic, color-specific daimyos. The former stars Toshiro Mifune and the latter Tatsuya Nakadai, two Japanese icons who reappear throughout a canon that incorporates everything from pulp to Noh theatre, Shakespearean tragedy to the almighty Bushido code. Exhibit C easily reminded me of how much I love hip hop. Between the hauntingly soulful Just Blaze track against J.E's flow and wordplay this is my pick for track of the year...hands down! If you have not yet heard this then please play attention to J.E's last verse. It's bananas....HOWEVER! I was rocking some demo tracks recently, one of them being a song called "Topless" penned by T.I & Nas for Dr' Dre's upcoming Detox album and noticed a strong influence from Nas on J.E's final verse. Fortunately many of these cartoons were banned. The damage was however irreperably done. Interestingly the 1st clip listed (Betty Boop) has a caption that reads "Classic Betty Boop cartoon that was banned from TV due to racist assumptions." "ASSUMPTIONS" you say! Well check the clip at the 3:08 mark and you tell me if the message is "Assumed"! "We was done soooo wrong"!

The streets were still hot in the 90's and the lure of ghetto culture permeated in our daily doings. 40's, chinese food, "runs", basketball, Ooo-Wops, blunts, jeeps, sub-woofers, women and music all went hand in hand. NY in the 90's was so fresh! The other day I came across the DJ Khalil produced single "Fear" by the "It Kid" of the moment. Drake. It made me think about this time when NY was NY. Moody, introspective and honest...thats what it was. DRAKE BY THE WAY DESTROYS THAT SONG...IN A GOOD WAY!!! Then there is Raekwons OB4CL2...Catalina...WHOA! Bricks...WHOA...check the links.

The 1st "beat" that made me LOVE NY Hip-Hop was Nas's "NY State of Mind". I recall getting the cassette and popping in my radio...that bassline DAMN! No record had ever captured the streets like this one. The music was SO hood. . A few classic albums and singles followed. Who could forget Black Moon's "Bucktown" off of their "Enta Da Stage" debut or Onyx's hit "Slam"! My favorite from them was "Walk In New York". Then you have timeless classics like Wu-Tang's "Cream", Jay-Z's "Feelin It" and the ONLY record that makes me feel the same way now as it did the 1'st time I ever heard it it...Notorious BIG's "Who Shot Ya"....CLASSIC!!!

11 platinum albums in is a tough act to follow, yet Jay-Z has consistently ceased to disappoint us. Early leaks had me seriously concerned. "Ghetto Techno" sucks, "Reminder" sucks. However the light shines through with the latest of the leaks. "What We Talkin About" features indie superstars Grizzly Bear and "Hate" ft. Kanye. Jay-Z's flows are most impressive and lyrically he sounds passionate . I will trump any skepticism with optimism, knowing that HOV is a master. Blueprint 3 will be the much needed refresher course for the new generation, illustrating exactly how classic material is made. "You stuck on being hardcore, chuck the deuce up.."

As a DJ there are records and artists who's body of work produce multiple "ohhh moments". For me its Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Marvin Gaye and most certainly Micheal Jackson. MJ, in my book unarguably the greatest and most influential singer of our generation. His work to this day STILL influences artists such as Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Usher and Chris Brown. I cannot forget to mention Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton the main producer and writer for his greatest albums Thriller & Off the Wall.
